What it does
The iPhone sends non-completed itineraries and active ride state through WatchConnectivity.
With the iPhone reachable, the watch can request start and stop ride actions.
Apple Maps opens locally on Apple Watch; Google Maps and Waze hand off to a reachable paired iPhone.

Apple Watch can ask a reachable iPhone to start or stop a ride. Apple Maps opens on Apple Watch; Google Maps and Waze also require the iPhone to be reachable.
Same handoff limits as iPhone
The watch uses the same handoff limits as the iPhone, so waypoint counts and dropped-stop warnings stay consistent.
What it does
- Syncs active ride context and draft itineraries.
- Shows route list and route detail.
- Can use an available Watch location for smart start behavior.
- Supports external navigation through the same handoff limits used on iPhone.
Limits
- The watch app does not edit routes.
- The watch app does not show maps or manage memories.
- Ride controls, Google Maps, and Waze from Apple Watch require a reachable paired iPhone.
